What Happens on Nyepi Day?

For those that haven’t enjoyed a Nyepi Day in Bali just yet, you are in for something that is not like what you’ve seen anywhere else in the world. You can learn more about the Balinese New Year and what it is all about here.

This year, Nyepi Day falls on Wednesday, March 22, which means from 6 am on March 22 to 6 am on March 23, you must not go outside from the venue you are staying. At night time you must not have any lights showing outside. Some internet providers will shut for the day, there are no cars or bikes, or planes allowed (except for emergency services). Generally, the idea is to be quiet, so no loud music is to be played either.

At night time you must go outside and look at the sky… if it’s a clear night, it will be one of the most spectacular visions you have seen. With no light pollution, the stars are so clear and last year we had the perfect vision of the Milky Way and lots of other constellations.

The night before Nyepi be sure to take to the streets to enjoy the Ogah-Ogah parades all over Bali. This is a fun and vibrant event and each areas of Bali has its own parades. Be sure to ask the staff at your accommodation or locals in the streets where your closest festival will be and where to get the best spot to watch!
