“Trash in Bali is not sorted, that is the problem,” said Mahendra Jaya. He added that the Bali Provincial Government had planned from the start to close the Suwung TPA by shifting waste management in the Sarbagita area to the existing TPST and TPS3R. However, this is still hampered by waste processing capacity which is not yet optimal. “Previously we expected the Kertalangu TPST to be 400 tons per day but in practice it was only 150 tons, whereas waste production in Bali was 1100 tons per day for Sarbagita (Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar, Tabanan. ed),” he said.
Meanwhile, Sungai Watch Founder Gary Bencheghib said Sungai Watch is a non-profit organization/foundation that focuses on stopping the rate of plastic waste before it enters the sea by cleaning rivers by installing rubbish nets. Apart from cleaning activities, the organization also provides education and outreach to the surrounding community.
“We have identified more than 350 illegal dumpsites in Bali. We are trying to clean up all these illegal open dumpsites through weekly and emergency cleaning, but in the future we want the involvement of the District Government in curbing the increasingly mushrooming illegal landfills,” he concluded .
