Hotel Indigo properties have crafted a totally unique identity by taking cues from the local neighbourhoods and culture – and Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach is no different. Together with renowned Balinese artist Nano Uhero, this beachfront gem presents a mind-blowing sculptural installation made of radical weaving techniques titled “Gentle Monster.”

Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach lives to vibe with stories of people, places, and traditions through distinctive art, design, and service.

Commemorating the sacred Galungan Day, the boutique hotel collaborates with Balinese artist and master weaver Nano Uhero. He’s bringing his “radical weaving” technique to craft a stunning sculptural installation for the hotel’s Neighborhood Gallery (Lobby).

Weaving is a big part of Balinese culture. From canang sari – daily offerings weaved from banana leaves – to woven architecture and textiles, this age-old technique has been used for centuries.

Meet Nano Uhero, born in 1976 in Ubud, Bali. He carefully preserves the traditional weaving method and brings it into the context of contemporary art. Nano uses natural materials, such as rattan and bamboo, and recycled materials, like unused plastic cargo belts, rope, and other subproducts of our culture.

Nano Uhero transforms hundreds of recycled plastic belts into a large-scale sculpture, the Gentle Monster, a fictional creature representing industrialization and technology’s duality. It also serves as a cool reminder to be smart with plastic!

The Gentle Monster turns what could threaten the ecosystem into stunning art with a splash of hope. On Galungan, the Balinese celebrate Dharma triumphing over Adharma – meaning, good beats evil. The Gentle Monster reaffirms this hopeful message, reminding us that tackling today’s eco-hurdles is doable through art and community.

Apart from this creative project with Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach, Nano’s boundary-pushing installations and environmental projects are spread over the whole island of Bali. You might have caught his work at the Joyland festival or the iconic Meditation Chair he whipped up for the Museum of Space!

Make sure to see the Gentle Monster installation live at Hotel Indigo Bali’s Neighborhood Gallery!
